U Mobile appears to have quietly activated VoNR (Voice over New Radio) for 5G calling.
What I am seeing:
-Calls can go through while staying on 5G.
-ServiceMode on Samsung shows “VoNR” during a call, even if the status bar still shows the VoLTE icon.
This seems to work on both 5G SA and 5G NSA in some areas.
Notes:
1. The VoLTE icon does not always change to a VoNR icon, so do not rely on the status bar.
2. VoNR may still depend on coverage, device model, and firmware. Some phones may fall back to LTE for calls.
If you are on U Mobile:
Guess they've enabled 5G SA on their cheaper postpaid plans. It was restricted to higher tier plans before. No VoNR on my phone though.
n28 + n78.
EDIT: Tried calling the phone from another number and it stayed on 5G. I was looking for "Vo5G" indicator, it's still showing "VoLTE" if you bring down the notification shade.
