  • Amazon is developing a new smartphone. The project is known internally as Transformer. It is under way in the company’s devices and services unit.

The phone is meant to work as a mobile personalization device. It would sync with the Alexa voice assistant. It would also serve as a way for Amazon to reach customers during the day.
The effort forms part of a long-term plan linked to Jeff Bezos. He has wanted a voice-driven computing assistant like the one in the Star Trek series.

In 2014 Amazon launched its first smartphone, the Fire Phone. The device was overseen by Bezos. It was withdrawn after just over a year.
The new Transformer project focuses on artificial intelligence features. These could remove the need for traditional app stores. Users would not have to download and register apps before use.

Alexa is expected to form a main part of the phone. It may not serve as the main operating system.

The project is led by a group called ZeroOne inside Amazon’s devices unit. ZeroOne was set up one year ago. Its task is to make breakthrough gadgets. J Allard, who previously worked at Microsoft on the Zune and Xbox, leads the group.

Amazon has looked at both a standard smartphone and a simpler dumbphone with fewer features. The simpler version could help reduce screen time. It might also act as a second phone alongside existing devices.

No details are available on the expected price, possible revenue, or the money committed to the project. The launch timeline remains unclear. The effort could end if plans change or costs become an issue.
