Apple has announced the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. These are the most advanced Apple silicon chips for professional laptops. They power the new MacBook Pro.
The chips use a new Fusion Architecture. This design combines two dies into one system on a chip. It includes a powerful CPU, scalable GPU, Media Engine, unified memory controller, Neural Engine, and Thunderbolt 5 support.
Both chips feature an 18-core CPU. It has six super cores, described as the world’s fastest CPU cores. There are also 12 new performance cores for efficient multithreaded tasks. The CPU delivers up to 30 percent better performance in professional workloads compared to the previous generation.
The GPU scales to up to 40 cores. Each GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator. With higher unified memory bandwidth, the chips offer over four times the peak GPU compute for AI tasks. Graphics performance improves by up to 35 percent in ray-traced applications.
The chips include a faster 16-core Neural Engine with improved memory connection for on-device AI and Apple Intelligence features.
Other technologies include an updated Media Engine with hardware support for H.264, HEVC, AV1 decode, and ProRes encode and decode. They support always-on Memory Integrity Enforcement for security without performance loss. Thunderbolt 5 ports use custom controllers on the chip.
The new MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max is available for pre-order from 4 March 2026. It will be available starting 11 March 2026.
