- Apple has unveiled HomeView, its first smart display, but Malaysians cannot buy it at launch. Apple has restricted the release to the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa. The device is also unavailable in the European Union because Siri AI is not yet supported on iOS in that region.

HomeView joins Amazon Echo Show and Google Nest Hub in the smart display category. It launched at US$299 in the United States, significantly higher than the Echo Show 8 at US$179.99 and the Nest Hub at US$99. In Singapore, both HomeView variants are priced at SGD 399, approximately RM1,220. Malawysians have no official channel to purchase the device.
The situation mirrors Apple’s smart home rollout pattern. While Apple TV 4K (4th generation) is available in Malaysia at RM1,349 and HomePod mini 2 at RM649, HomeView remains excluded from the local market. Apple has not announced when or if the device will reach Malaysia.
“Apple HomeView is designed to be shared by everyone in the home yet feel completely personal to each user,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “It recognises your face to shift from a household screen to your own experience, fills the room with incredible sound, keeps you connected with the people who matter most with FaceTime, and makes it easy to control your smart home.”
HomeView features a 7-inch Liquid Retina display with a stainless steel hinge connecting it to a domed speaker base. Two versions are available: tabletop and wall-mounted, both at the same price point. The screen adjusts brightness from 500 nits down to 0.3 nits for night-time use. The device runs on the A18 chip and centres on Siri AI, which is in beta in software version 27.2.
Six users can register their faces for personalised content in Messages, Calendar and Reminders. Personal data appears only when the recognised user’s paired iPhone or iPad is present and recently unlocked. Shared albums and music remain accessible to all household members and guests.
Siri AI requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad for full personal context features. Without one, users still access general knowledge, conversations and music discovery. Server-based features carry daily usage limits, and Apple says expanded access will cost extra in future.
Audio comes from two custom full-range drivers in the display, plus a down-firing woofer and two force-cancelling passive radiators in the base. The device supports Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple TV content and multiroom audio with HomePod speakers. FaceTime calls use Center Stage to keep participants framed.
Smart home controls manage cameras, thermostats, lights, locks and blinds through touch or voice. The Home Camera face displays up to nine live feeds simultaneously. With an iCloud+ subscription, compatible cameras identify people, pets, packages and vehicles with end-to-end encryption. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarm sounds trigger alerts to Apple devices.
Camera and microphone processing happens in Secure Exclaves on the A18 chip, isolated from apps, the system and Apple. Siri requests run on-device or through Private Cloud Compute, where Apple says data is not stored or accessed.
For Malaysians seeking similar functionality, the HomePod mini 2 at RM649 offers voice-controlled smart home management without a screen. The Apple TV 4K at RM1,349 now includes built-in far-field microphones for hands-free Siri commands, though it lacks the HomeView’s display interface. Importing HomeView from Singapore or other launch markets voids warranty and may cause compatibility issues with Siri AI regional restrictions.
Apple is collaborating with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric on the Apple Home Collection, launching December in the US, UK and Canada. These accessories require HomeView, HomePod or Apple TV as a hub, further tying the ecosystem together. No plans to extend HomeView availability to Malaysia have been announced.
