  • Meta is planning large-scale layoffs that could affect 20% or more of its workforce. Three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters this information.

The company aims to balance high costs from artificial intelligence infrastructure and prepare for efficiency gains from AI-assisted workers. No date has been set for the layoffs. The final number of job cuts has not been decided.

Top executives recently told senior leaders about the plans. They asked those leaders to start planning staff reductions. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss the matter.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said the report was speculative and described it as theoretical approaches.

If Meta carries out cuts at the 20% level, this would be the largest reduction since the restructuring in late 2022 and early 2023. That period was called the “year of efficiency.” Meta had nearly 79,000 employees as of 31 December, according to its latest filing.

The company cut 11,000 jobs in November 2022, about 13% of its workforce then. It announced another 10,000 job cuts about four months later.

Over the past year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has focused on competing in generative AI. Meta has offered large pay packages to attract top AI researchers to a new superintelligence team. The company plans to spend $600 billion on data centres by 2028. It recently acquired Moltbook, a social networking platform for AI agents. Meta also spent at least $2 billion to buy the Chinese AI startup Manus.

Zuckerberg has spoken about efficiency gains from these investments. In January he said projects that once needed large teams can now be done by one talented person.

The planned cuts follow a pattern seen at other major US tech companies this year. Executives have linked changes to improvements in AI systems.
