  • Spotify Premium users in Malaysia who previously paid for a full year upfront are facing a significantly higher effective yearly cost after the annual payment option disappeared from Spotify’s local subscription offerings.

Spotify Malaysia currently charges RM17.50 a month for Premium Individual, with its official Premium page only displaying monthly subscriptions. At that price, keeping Premium for 12 months costs RM210.

That compares with RM175 for the annual Premium Individual plan previously available in Malaysia, equivalent to about RM14.58 a month.

For customers who previously subscribed annually, the change effectively increases the cost of 12 months of Spotify Premium by RM35, or 20%, from RM175 to RM210.

The difference is significant because the old annual plan was not simply another way to pay.

Before Spotify increased its Malaysian prices in August 2025, Premium Individual cost RM15.90 a month. Paying monthly for a full year would therefore have cost RM190.80, while the RM175 annual option represented a saving of RM15.80, or around 8%.

Spotify subsequently increased Premium Individual in Malaysia from RM15.90 to RM17.50 a month in August 2025. Premium Student increased from RM8.50 to RM9.50, Duo from RM21.50 to RM24.50 and Family from RM24.90 to RM27.90. Spotify said at the time that it periodically updates prices to continue investing in its products and features.

The removal of the annual option therefore has a bigger impact on users who previously chose to pay RM175 upfront.

Not only do they now pay the equivalent of RM210 over 12 months, they also lose the ability to secure their Spotify Premium price for an entire year.

With an annual prepaid subscription, a customer who paid RM175 received Premium for the purchased 12-month period. Under monthly billing, the customer instead pays the prevailing subscription price each month.

That matters because Spotify can revise its subscription prices again in the future. Monthly subscribers would then move to the revised rate after the applicable notification and billing period, rather than retaining today’s RM17.50 rate for the remainder of a prepaid year.

There also appears to have been little communication about the disappearance of annual payments in Malaysia.

Spotify’s Malaysian Premium page currently lists Individual, Student, Duo and Family subscriptions, all with monthly pricing. It does not advertise a 12-month Premium Individual subscription.

Spotify has not, however, published a specific announcement confirming that its annual Premium plan has been permanently discontinued in Malaysia.

The practical result for previous annual subscribers is nevertheless clear.

A Malaysian customer who could previously purchase 12 months of Spotify Premium Individual for RM175 would now spend RM210 over the same 12-month period at the current monthly rate.

That makes Premium 20% more expensive over a year for those users, while removing both the annual discount and the ability to lock in the subscription price for 12 months.

For these customers, Spotify has effectively implemented another price increase in Malaysia, even though the current RM17.50 monthly price itself has not changed since the August 2025 adjustment.
