  • Microsoft has confirmed its most powerful Surface laptop yet will go on sale on October 16, priced from $2,599 in the United States. The Surface Laptop Ultra is now open for pre-order through Microsoft’s online store and select retailers worldwide, but the company has not announced a Malaysia release date or local pricing for the device.

The 15-inch laptop runs on the new Nvidia RTX Spark chip, an Arm-based design that pairs an Nvidia Grace CPU with up to 20 cores and an Nvidia Blackwell RTX GPU with up to 6,144 cores. It supports up to 128GB of unified memory. Because the chip is Arm-based, the laptop runs Windows on Arm and handles x86 applications through Microsoft’s Prism emulation layer.

The entry model at $2,599 carries the smaller RTX Spark configuration, with an 18-core CPU, 5,120 GPU cores, 24GB of memory and 512GB of storage. At the top of the range, a $5,899.99 version pairs the full 20-core chip with 128GB of memory and 1TB of storage. Microsoft has pitched the device at creative, engineering, software development and local AI workloads.

The screen is a mini-LED touchscreen that Microsoft says reaches 2,000 nits of peak HDR brightness. The company claims that figure is up to 25% higher than the published specifications for Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro chip, which starts at $2,999. Microsoft says the Surface Laptop Ultra is lighter than the 16-inch MacBook Pro, measures under 18mm thick and weighs less than 4.5 pounds.

At an event in San Francisco on October 7, chief executive Satya Nadella appeared alongside Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang and Windows and Devices chief Pavan Davuluri. Microsoft said the laptop returns responses from locally run AI models twice as fast as the MacBook Pro M5 and generates video six times faster, according to Bloomberg.

The laptop introduces Magnetic Connect, which Microsoft calls the world’s first built-in magnetic USB-C charging on a laptop. The magnetic cable attaches to one of three USB-C ports and detaches under strain, while the port remains usable for data, video and accessories. The device also carries a USB-A port, HDMI, a full-size SD card reader and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Storage is user-removable, allowing owners to upgrade or replace the drive themselves.

Microsoft is courting MacBook users directly. Buyers in the United States and Canada who trade in an eligible MacBook Pro can claim up to $1,000 in cash back when buying a Surface Laptop Ultra. The offer runs from October 7 to November 23 through the Microsoft Store online in those two markets only.

For Malaysia, there is no confirmed launch window for the Surface Laptop Ultra. Previous Surface devices reached the country through authorised retailers, including All IT Hypermarket, Harvey Norman, PC Image, Senheng Electric, SNS Network and Thunder Match Technology. The Snapdragon-powered Surface Pro and Surface Laptop generation arrived in Malaysia on July 23 this year, roughly two weeks after the global rollout.

Alongside the laptop, Microsoft announced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a $5,999 compact desktop for developers built on the same RTX Spark chip. It offers up to one petaflop of AI performance and supports AI models with up to 120 billion parameters. The wider RTX Spark lineup includes laptops and mini PCs from Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and MSI, all shipping from October 16.

Analysts told CNBC and Yahoo Finance the devices will likely appeal mostly to early adopters and developers as the first wave of Nvidia-powered Windows on Arm machines.
