  • YTL AI Labs has launched ILMUcode, a new agentic AI coding platform for developers and students in Malaysia, powered by the ILMU-GLM-5.3 model developed through a partnership with Chinese artificial intelligence company Z.ai.

ILMUcode was launched at Universiti Malaya on 1 October 2026, with the university becoming the first in Malaysia to introduce the AI coding platform to its students.

The platform is designed to assist with multiple stages of software development rather than only generating snippets of code. Users can ask ILMUcode to understand existing codebases, write and modify code, troubleshoot problems, build new features and turn software ideas into working applications.

It can also work across a development environment involving the terminal, Git and browser previews. YTL AI Labs says ILMUcode supports agentic workflows where the AI can plan, execute and iterate on a task, as well as parallel development tasks and scheduled automations.

At the centre of the platform is ILMU-GLM-5.3, a coding-focused addition to YTL AI Labs’ ILMU family of artificial intelligence models.

ILMU-GLM-5.3 is based on GLM-5.3 technology from Z.ai, which has positioned the model for long-running software development and AI agent tasks.

According to benchmark results published by Z.ai, GLM-5.3 recorded a score of 88.2 on Terminal-Bench 2.1 and 66.9 on DeepSWE v1.1.

Those results put the model close to several other frontier models in Z.ai’s testing, although it did not record the highest result in either benchmark. The published results are Z.ai’s own evaluations and benchmark performance may vary depending on the testing environment and agent configuration.

YTL AI Labs describes ILMUcode as providing frontier-level coding capabilities through sovereign AI infrastructure in Malaysia.

The sovereign infrastructure element forms part of the wider ILMU strategy, which combines models developed by YTL AI Labs with technology from international AI companies.

Foong Chee Mun, CEO of YTL AI Labs, said the company is developing its own flagship models while also working with companies including NVIDIA and Z.ai.

“With the launch of ILMUcode, we are equipping Malaysians with frontier AI not just to use it, but to build with AI and contribute to Malaysia’s ambition to become an AI nation,” Foong said.

As part of the ILMUcode launch, Universiti Malaya will provide the platform to 800 first-year students from its Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology.

Each student will receive RM100 in ILMUcode credits per month for three months, giving them up to RM300 in credits during the programme.

The initiative is intended to allow students to use AI-assisted software development tools from the beginning of their university studies rather than encountering them only after entering the workforce.

Universiti Malaya Vice Chancellor Dato’ Seri Professor Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman said the university is the first in Malaysia to provide its computer science students with access to ILMUcode.

“Through ILMUcode, we are equipping Malaysia’s next generation of technology builders and strengthening our Malaysian AI talent pipeline,” he said.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, who officiated the launch, said the initiative is expected to be expanded to other higher education institutions.

Under the initial Universiti Malaya deployment, the platform will be used to help students develop digital skills and create applications and other software projects.

ILMUcode also expands the growing ILMU product portfolio beyond conversational AI and autonomous AI agents.

YTL AI Labs already offers ILMUchat, its Malaysian-focused conversational AI service, as well as ILMUclaw, a platform for building autonomous AI agents.

The wider ILMU family includes YTL AI Labs’ multimodal model as well as speech recognition, text-to-speech and embedding models. YTL AI Labs has also partnered with NVIDIA to develop ILMU-Nemo models based on NVIDIA’s Nemotron open models.

ILMUcode’s partnership with Z.ai extends that ecosystem specifically into software development.

Z.ai co-founder and chief scientist Professor Jie Tang said the partnership is intended to make advanced AI capabilities available to Malaysian developers and students.

“Our mission is to make frontier AI accessible to builders around the world,” he said.

ILMUcode is available to developers, students and other users through YTL AI Labs’ ILMU platform. Users must create an ILMU Console account before downloading and signing in to ILMUcode.

YTL AI Labs’ public ILMUcode page currently also offers users free credit when setting up an account, although general consumer pricing for the service is not listed on the public product page.
