  • Google has expanded Gmail end-to-end encryption for Workspace users to iOS and Android.

The change lets mobile users compose and read encrypted messages directly inside the Gmail app for the first time.

The feature forms part of Gmail client-side encryption. Until now it was available only on desktop.

Users no longer need extra apps or separate mail portals for encrypted email on mobile. The function now sits inside the standard Gmail app on both platforms.

Google states that encrypted messages can go to any recipient. The sender does not need to know the recipient email provider.

If the recipient uses Gmail the message appears as a normal email thread. If the recipient uses another provider they can read and reply through a secure browser interface. No extra software is required.

The feature is live now for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains.

Access needs an Enterprise Plus plan together with either the Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus add-on. This tier targets enterprise and public sector customers.

Admins must first turn on Android and iOS clients in the CSE admin interface inside the Admin Console. Only then can users use the feature.

To encrypt a single message users tap the lock icon in the compose window and choose additional encryption before they start writing.
