  • More than 18.8 million web-based cyber threats were detected in Malaysia during 2025. This averaged over 51,000 attempted malicious incidents each day.

    The data came from Kaspersky Security Network.Routine internet activities such as browsing websites and downloading files remained common entry points for cybercriminals. In 2025, 26.7 per cent of users in Malaysia faced web-borne threats. This placed the country 42nd globally for exposure to web surfing risks.

    Web threats often spread via compromised websites, malicious scripts, deceptive links, or browser vulnerabilities. Some involved drive-by downloads where malware activated automatically on visiting infected sites. Others used phishing pages mimicking legitimate services.

    According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, ICT and e-commerce contributed about 23.4 per cent to national GDP in 2024. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo stated Malaysia aims to raise this to 30 per cent by 2030.

    Digital channels have become essential for businesses, financial services, and public administration. Internet browsers act as key gateways to operations and personal data. Cybercriminals are adapting with automation and generative AI for tailored phishing campaigns. These often align with government announcements, festive periods, or public events.

    The MyCERT Q3 2025 report showed fraud as the top cyber category in Malaysia.
