  • Prepaid SIM cards in Malaysia follow clear rules set by each telco for validity periods, grace periods after expiry, and automatic termination. If you do not top up before the grace period ends, the account terminates automatically. Your remaining credit gets forfeited, and the mobile number is released back to the pool (you cannot recover it and must buy a new starter pack). This applies to all listed providers for standard prepaid plans.

Here is a quick breakdown by Telcos:

Maxis Hotlink Active period depends on your top-up amount (credit validity starts from the reload date). After the active period ends, you enter a 50-day Credit Grace Period. You can receive incoming calls and SMS only (outgoing services and data are suspended). If you do not top up by the end of the 50 days, the plan terminates, any unused credit is forfeited, and the number is withdrawn. You need a new starter kit to get service again. (Some older plans used 30 days, but 2025 standard plans use 50 days.)

CelcomDigi (Celcom and Digi prepaid plans) Validity extends based on reload amount (e.g., RM10 gives a set number of days per plan). After validity expires, the account enters a grace period:

    • CelcomDigi Prepaid 5G Biru or Kuning plans: 60 days.
    • Digi Prepaid NEXT or Raja Kombo plans: 90 days (R1 grace period). During grace, services are limited (incoming calls/SMS may work in some cases). If you do not reload before grace ends, the account terminates, credit is forfeited, and the number is released.

Unifi Mobile The SIM stays valid if you reload, buy add-ons, or make an outgoing transaction (call, SMS, or paid data pass) within 90 days. For Uni5G WOW prepaid: after active period, you get a 60-day grace period with restrictions on outgoing services. If you do nothing for the full period (90 days inactivity or 60 days grace, depending on plan), the SIM becomes inactive, the service terminates, credit/allowances are forfeited, and the number is released permanently.

U Mobile Active period is based on top-up (e.g., RM1 adds 1 day; starter pack gives 5–10 days initially). After active period ends, you enter a 60-day Passive/Grace Period (outgoing calls, SMS, and data are barred). If you do not top up before the 60 days end, the service disconnects automatically, the number is reallocated, and credit is forfeited. You can also buy a RM30 validity extension for 30 extra days via the app (up to 5 times per month).

Yes Account Validity Period is fixed by reload denomination (e.g., RM10 = 20 days, RM30 = 60 days, RM100 = 200 days). Multiple reloads extend from the latest date. After validity expires, you enter a 50-day Grace Period (limited to white-listed webpages for top-up only). If you do not purchase reload or data add-on before grace ends, the account terminates, credit and data are forfeited, and the number is withdrawn immediately.

Tune Talk After credit validity expires, you enter a 45-day Grace Period (balance stays but you cannot make calls, send SMS, or use data until you top up). If you do not top up within the 45 days, the account terminates and the number is lost. (Note: Tune Talk offers a 1-Year Validity add-on for longer extension on eligible plans.)

Redone (redONE) After active validity expires, you get a 50-day Credit Grace Period (incoming calls and SMS only; data and outgoing services suspended). After the 50 days, you have an extra 10 days to reload and reinstate the line plus any remaining credit. If you miss the full window, the line terminates permanently.

    General Tips

    • Always check your plan’s exact validity via the provider app or *100# / MyAccount portal, as top-up value directly affects active days.
    • Set reminders before grace periods start.
    • For tourists/non-Malaysians, note that 2025 MCMC updates introduced shorter rules on some registrations, but standard citizen prepaid follows the above.
    • MCMC requires all prepaid SIMs to be registered; inaccurate details can also lead to suspension and termination after notice periods.
    • Policies can update, so always verify the latest T&Cs on the official Telco website or app for your specific plan.

I hope this info helps you manage your prepaid line and avoid losing your number. If you have experiences with any of these, feel free to share what worked for you.
