Samsung is testing new silicon-carbon batteries for upcoming smartphones. The tests include a 20,000 mAh battery. This unit showed a defect after 960 charge cycles.
Another option is an 18,000 mAh battery with three stacked cells. These cells are 6,699 mAh at 4.2 mm, 6,000 mAh at 3.9 mm, and 5,527 mAh at 3.28 mm thick. The total thickness is 12.8 mm. This suits thicker outdoor phones.
A 12,000 mAh battery uses two cells and measures 9.3 mm thick. It may fit mainstream phones better. Samsung aims for 1,500 charge cycles before capacity falls to 80 per cent. The 12,000 mAh battery could offer 20 to 25 hours of active use. Tests continue, so these numbers are not final.
The batteries are too thick for most current Galaxy models. Samsung’s work on silicon-carbon batteries may lead to larger capacities like those in Chinese phones.
