- The exposure of a Maxis customer’s private billing details should not be dismissed simply because the company described it as an isolated incident.

An unauthorised individual was able to access account information and disclose it publicly. This included billing details, advance payments and digital purchases. Such information should only be available to authorised personnel for legitimate purposes.
Maxis said customer account access is recorded and monitored, and that it identified the individual involved. However, monitoring access after the information has already been exposed is not the same as preventing unauthorised access.
Telecommunications companies hold large amounts of sensitive customer data. They must ensure that internal access is strictly controlled and that personal information cannot be viewed or shared carelessly.
